How can I refurbish a small coffee table?
I have a small old coffee table that has a ledge on the top and a divided shelf on the bottom. I will want to varnish it and maybe put ceramic tile on the top. How would I start this project?

Try a “penny” top with resin coating
First, I always clean a piece. Soapy water, a scrub pad (I like SOS pads or brillo). Then once it's clean and dry, I strip it using Citristrip. Depending on the piece, I use a putty knife, a toothbrush, a soft scrub brush, steel wool etc. until I get all the finish off. Then, I clean it again to remove any residue. When it's completely dry, I sand it. A palm sander if you have one, is a big help. I also like sponge sanding blocks. If the wood is nice enough for a stain finish (sometimes the stripped piece reveals imperfections that the finish hid), after the wood is free of sanding dust, apply your stain according to the directions for your product. Once you get the look you want, apply a clear sealer. I usually don't work with tile, but, I hope this helps!
