How do I paint or upcyle inexpensive book shelves??
I have some of those inexpensive bookshelves that you put together yourself. They are sometimes sold under a brand name like Sauder, Orion, or South Shore. I want to give them some color. Maybe painting the back wall an accent color and the rest something else, maybe white.
Is there a way that I can do that! Can I paint directly on the finish that is on the fiberboard or do I need to prep it somehow?
Thank you for your help.

Hi Tricia,
Yes, you can paint the bookshelves any color that you like. I would be sure to prime the boards so that the colors will stick the best and last longer. If you're going to paint the back panel, be sure to tape off around the edges or if you can, take it off and paint it, then when it's dry put it back on. Use a latex paint and a brush for the edges and you could use a small roller for the smooth part of the shelves. Wishing you the best.

Just lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sandpaper to remove the shine. Then prime with Kilz primer and paint your color.
Tricia....William suggests exactly what I would do. It is really easy and the difference will surprise you.
