How can I update a laminate countertop?

I have a fake wood laminate countertop from the 70s looking to up date on a very tight budget

    A countertop paint kit from your building supply will probably be your cheapest alternative. They can look great, but you will have to be careful when you use the counter after painting.

    New laminates are quite beautiful. Peel off the old laminate from the substrate and replace with a new laminate. They are sold in rolls and you will need contact cement and a rubber roller. Very inexpensive

      A small handheld router makes edge trimming easier. The hardest part is laying it down because the contact cement adheres as soon as it touches. Thin strips of wood or cardboard will help suspend the laminate and keep the two adhesive surfaces from touching while you line it up. Then work from the center out to adhere and roll out bubbles. Once it's fully glued down, run the trim router around the perimeter to cut off excess
