What do I do with my tulips?

I’ve had beautiful Sweden tulips for years and this year they were really sparse. What do I do? Do they die after so many years? Do I dig up the bulbs?

Replant them. They have gone too deep. Also bulbettes!

It may be time to plant some new bulbs since some do deplete with age. Look for some good deals in the Fall when they come on sale and plant before winter sets in. They also may need thinning out if there are too many in close proximity. You could also try a plant fertilizer but that would have to wait until Spring. Trim off the tops of the ones that are turning brown.

Something could have eaten them, squirrels like to dig them up and eat them. I would try replanting.

Are they crowded? Dig up this Fall and see, then separate them a bit. Be mindful of the depth. Good luck.

Our extension office gardener said that tulips do have a live span. When you see just leaves coming up, you may as well plant new ones because they will not regenerate and produce flowers. This is in the midwest with cold winters.
