How to use chalk paint on an old oak dresser. What do I need to do regarding cleaning and using the paint? Do you need to use primer?

  • No primer is needed with chalk paint, but if the surface is dirty, clean it and let it dry completely before using the paint. Good luck!

You do not need to prime nor sand, just clean and apply the chalk paint. You should cover the chalk paint when you are finished with a good urethane though. They make the kind that does not yellow now, so you might ask for that kind at your paint supply store.

  • The dresser should be cleaned thoroughly with dish soap and water, then left to fully dry. Primer isn't necessary but it is helpful to use a piece of fine grit sandpaper to slightly roughen the surface, then wipe the dust away (this way, the chalk paint has something to bite into and will last longer, especially if furniture polish was used on the dresser in the past). The chalk paint will be applied with a good quality brush then sealed as desired. Hope this helps!

Hi! Some of my favorite chalk paint brands are Annie Sloan, Jolie and Dixie Belle all work great! No priming or sanding required with these paints!
