I'd like remove the carpet from our guest room and would like to put in wood-look flooring as my budget is very tight. Would Luan, cut in 6" strips be possible to use?

I think it would actually be better to get an inexpensive linoleum and lay that down. Less work and easy to clean, or maybe press on tiles.

It will need to be put down with adhesive and finished very well. It would likely get worn out quickly. You’re better off with luxury vinyl plank or laminate.
