To clean a top-loading washing machine with vinegar, start by running it on the hottest and longest setting. As it's filling up with water, pour 4 cups of white vinegar into the washer. For an even deeper cleaning, add 1 cup of baking soda to the washer as well.
If you use 1/4 cup in your softener cup instead of the usual Downy or Fleecy softener the machine will stay clean. You clothes will smell fresh and the vinegar will remove any residue of soap since some machines do not rinse well enough to remove all of the excess soap. Cut back on your detergent also. What is recommended on containers is usually way too much.
