Previously painted surfaces may not require priming unless you’re switching between oil-based or latex paint, or the existing paint is failing. Always scrape and sand any deteriorating surfaces before applying primer. Remember, your paint job is no better than the preparation that goes into it. if you are using semi-gloss again may not need primer but will need 2 coats to cover a darker color. usually primer is cheaper than paint & can be tinted same color as paint or get all in one primer/paint(more $).
Yes, you can do that. First, light sand it with a fine grit sandpaper to remove a bit of the gloss, then clean and prime it. Good luck!
Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any shine. Wipe down with a damp cloth. Prime with Kilz primer. One coat should do it. Then paint your color. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.
