I do not know what the finish is, but it is wood. I was purchased several year ago by my mother
Hi Dina, with an end table at either end you could build a five foot long top and make a desk
Or put them back to back, put one solid piece that spans whatever length you want and make a coffee table.
Are they such that you could put glass on them? Or a board stained to match.
Make tops from 3/4" thick birch plywood (have the people at the store cut it for you free). Stain or paint to coordinate. Attach it to the bases using L brackets. I wouldn't try lifting the table by such tops, but they should certainly be sturdy enough for use.
Can you put them together to make a table by adding a piece of wood to the top? You could even tile the top.
