Buy yellow chalk paint, and a good synthetic brush clean your piece well, removing all dirt, dust and oils with TSP. If the surface is shiny, scuff it with some 220 grit sandpaper to remove the sheen. Paint two coats. Let dry completely, and then cover all with a high quality poly acrylic. For high use areas (where your equipment will be, and may scuff, give it three to four light coats of the poly. Sand lightly with 220 grit between coats. Finally, let the entire piece cure for at least 7 days before using.
