Marigolds. Not only are they pretty, they also repel mosquitoes!
Hi Brigita,
I personally like Hostas because they can be grown in pots and will last over the winter. I don't even need to take them inside (once they are established) and they come up every spring and look good for most of the summer. It's one think that I don't have to plant every year. There are a lot of different types/colors of hostas so you can mix or match them to create an interesting look. If you have friends or neighbors with hostas, you can ask them for a piece in the spring when they first come up and they won't even cost you anything. I got 2 pieces years ago from a neighbor and I now have at least 30 of them around our home. (We're on a corner so we have gardens all the way around the house! I put pots of hostas on the corners of the outdoor carpet that we put on our patio to keep the wind from flipping up the carpet. Love my hostas! :) Wishing you the best.
What zone are you in? Full sun? Shade? Makes a difference. My yard is in full sun with temps over 100°. My girlfriends yard in another state is in full shade.
It would depend on the area where you live, visit your local nursery for advice on this.
