How do I remove a patch of ant hills?

I have a patch of ant hills in the middle of my front lawn. It is about the size of a grave! If there were ever hills they have been washed down because of all the rain we have had this spring and summer. Can I get rid of them without calling an exterminator? They are not in my house. The yard was looking good until the last week or so.
