Maybe try a whitewash first? We struggled what to for for years then I finally took the plunge. The price was definitely right before spending money to cover when you are unsure what you want. I actually posted our journey "massive brick fireplace wall whitewash success?
The easiest thing to do would be to whitewash the brick. That gives it a more modern appearance.
