Poultry-fencing is cheap. I’d buy a couple of roles and make a decorative enclosure to keep them away from your valued plants.

I agree, fencing the chickens in will help, and you can always let them out certain times of the day or in limited areas to help keep plants alive.

Hostas are really hardy, try keeping them going as when they hadn't been eaten. I rescued a bunch that someone had on the roadside and hadn't watered or anything and they were there for days with bare roots. I planted them around my yard light and this year they are really beautiful (they were planted last fall). There were a couple of smaller ones that looked dead and I threw them in my half wine barrels after taking out my elephant ears. Once of them actually came back and it was just sitting on top of the soil all last brutally cold winter. The same may go for some of your other plants, they may be pretty hardy and come back this year or next if cared for.

i always crack up when I see pictures of chickens loose in a yard, they will eat and scratch everything in your yard. You have to fence them in, but do throw your garden and kitchen waste in with them to scratch around and eat if they like. They like to dust themselves with dirt also.
