How to protect old peeling paint without scraping?

I have an old wooden box that had been painted years ago, and is now peeling all over the sides. I like it this way, but I want to find a way to protect the exposed wood underneath while keeping the peeling paint. It's outside on a covered porch so not directly in the elements. Would using a spray polyurethane work over the paint peels?

Use a spray spar varnish, its,the only clear spray rated for outdoors.

I was going to agree w/ your idea of the polyurethane because that's my go to. I've always loved it's protection qualities. For this project I would use one with sun and element protection even though it isn't directly in the sun. If you have seasonal changes, that will affect it and moisture will too, -and also if you want one that won't yellow w/ age.
