How come my avocado leaves are being eaten?

I've had two avocado trees that give me beautiful avocados every year. This year the leaves are being eaten by?? The leaves are eaten in the middle, holes all over them!

might be slugs-your garden shop has a powder you can put around the bottom of the tree (and ask the person at the shop=you will probably get tons of answers here

  thank you, yes I went to home depot and bought the powder for slugs, spread the powder around my two trees this morning.It had never happened before and this tree is over 25 years old that my mother had planted!

  did you ask them if they might be slugs-sometimes a caterpillar will do the same thing
