jute around sole, even called Keds, other than ‘spot clean’ and don’t wash in washing machine, (even without jute surround) and don’t dry in sun. Cannot clean. Suggestions please?

  • I would use a small soft brush and a mild soap solution.

    Hi. Thank you, tried unsuccessful.

I have had several pair of white cloth canvas shoes that were beyond wearing only because of soil on the outside, so I painted them using white or almost white craft acrylic paint (or I painted them in a colorful overall design---polka dots are easy). Been doing this for 30 years---long before Keds started selling the painted ones. You don't have to mix any additive with the paint---not necessary at all, but use a good quality craft paint like Americana Decoart or Delta Ceramcoat. The paint adds a more wipeable surface and the shoes look great without being too stiff. Nothing to lose since the shoes are unwearable if you can't get the outside clean. Good luck!

Donna....I wash mine in washer (Keds) and hang on line outside in bright sun!

  • Why can't you put them in the washing machine?

Keds corporate customer service advised against, even for their sneakers without jut. Only for their shoes designated for machine washing. I imagine the jute would be destroyed, or seriously damaged. Before hearing ‘not to’ I had tried plain white Keds in washing machine without any luck in making any whiter.
