If you are using actual paint then you will need to sand lightly or use a liquid sandpaper to dull the finish, prime with a good primer such as Bullseye 1-2-3 primer which can be tinted to your final color, and then paint over with 2 coats of good quality enamel. If you are staining or lightening the stain then think about the Rustoleum kit which contains everything you need except the brush. It has all of the instructions and plenty to complete a whole set of kitchen cabinets.

IS it your kitchen cabinets? A picture would definitelly help

  • Hi Ann, we painted over our wood cabinets with Kilz primer and then Cashmere paint from Sherwin Williams. The Cashmere paint has some lacquer in it, creating a smooth and durable surface. Ours have been painted white for six years and still look good.

Remove the hardware, clean the cabinets really well (I like krud kutter), lightly scuff sand them with 220 grit sandpaper, prime with BIN shellac based primer (a couple of coats). BIN shellac based primer will prevent bleedthrough. Then paint with a nice enamel paint like sherwin williams emerald urethane wall and trim paint or benjamin moore advance.
