I would start with cleaning using Lysol Lime & Rust Remover Toilet Bowl cleaner, comes in a black squirt bottle. Scrub with Scrub Daddy or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Then it would depend on what you want to do about the surround. I really like the stacked stone look. Maybe this project will provide inspiration:

I’ve had great luck with Lysol Rust Removal first and then a steam cleaner. Good luck!

    Additionally some other options

Try Krud Kutter [at Lowe's or Home Depot]in a spray bottle.

It is non toxic and has very little odor to it. One of the best cleaners around.

There is a great product called "Bar Keeper's Friend." I highly recommend it! We had hard water stains on the bottom of our tub and it is the only thing that would remove them.

Have you tried Magic Eraser yet? Works great on bath tub rings.
