When I fixed up my steamer trunk, I scraped out the old lining to get rid of smells that nothing would fix. I scrubbed the whole thing inside and out and dried everything in the sun. I painted the wood with sealer, lined the drawers with mod podge and fabric. The outside was sanded and scrubbed to remove any rust. The outside was metal, so I used Rustoleum products. The metal hardware I used a metallic paint. You can buy replacement hinges and leather handles from several online companies by googling antique trunk replacement parts. Most are very helpful.
