Can I take off the top of this mantle?

We have an antique mantle in our family room. I love the look it... However it is a bit dated for our taste. Is there anyway we can remove the top of it? We want to mount the tv above the fireplace and change the color of the bottom of it if possible.

It may be one solid piece. but I doubt it. Look for any nails on the top piece nailed into the bottom piece. Easier option would be to use a hand saw, Japanese pull saw and cut the top from the bottom. It also may be nailed or glued to the wall. A little cutting and prying should remove it.

I'm facing the same situation in my house, but for me it's an entertainment center. What I'm planning on doing is carefully cutting the wood at the top of the shelf where the TV sat; for you that'd be the top of the mantle. Then I'm thinking of using a crowbar (cat's paw?) to remove the top portion of the unit as carefully as I can. However, I'm thinking of asking the advice of a professional woodworker/carpenter before I proceed.

Would the TV fit in the space on the top part? - I know this is not what you asked, but I have an idea

Unfortunately it will not. We have a rather large TV 😪

Please be kind enough to put it away until you move. The next owner is not likely the recognize right away but, I know I still feel like I was robbed by a selfish uncaring thief.
