How deep do I need to sink the posts when building an arbor?

I’m looking to build an arbor in front of my patio door. Do I need to sink the posts below the freeze line of 3 feet, or just enough to stabilize the arbor?

I would put it at least 16 inches down in the ground to be sturdy

Yes, if you want it to stand and be sturdy for years, you need to go to the freeze line.
