Hi Jan, you can pick up a new one for under $20, I would just replace it, it is easy to do and will make it look 100% better

Get a new one in the size you have, home depot have several to choose from. Should unscrew to replace.
replace it with new one(comes in colors)or a wood one or even rubber ones are available. take yours to hardware store and that way you will get the size and transition that you need so it will fit between flooring surfaces and door jamb
