There's only one way to strip, not hard just time consuming. Use a commercial stripper like Kleen Strip or Citristrip. Brush on, let it work, scrap off with a putty knife, used a stif brush in small areas. When mostly off go over it with stripper and steel wool. Wash down with lacquar thinner, sand. Ready for new stain. Don't just sand it off. Can gouge or go thru veneer.
If it is good wood, I would only use a quality finish stripper.
My favorite paint stripper is Blue Bear soy gel. It is eco friendly and can be used indoors! Works great too! :)
