Wonderful Rainbow Thistle Decoration To Brighten Your Home
Did you know that the thistle is the national flower of Scotland? It's one of my favourite flowers too, but I might be biased as my mother is Scottish. Also every morning I walk the my dog along the river bank where rows and rows of wild thistles grow. I love them both when they are in full purple bloom and when they have dried on the plant.
I decided to pick some of the dried thistles and create a fabulous bright and colourful decoration for my home to celebrate both my love of thistles and my Scottish heritage.
These are just a few of the hundreds of thistles I see on my morning dog walk.
I picked seven of these thistles for this craft. You will need gloves and secateurs. Be careful thistles are a prickly plant.
I love a rainbow and often use them in my interior decorations like these very popular tall succulent planters (see here). That is why I decided to spray paint each thistle a different colour of the rainbow.
Next I sawed a thick wooden broom handle into seven pieces about 2-3 inches in length.
Using a drill with a thickish drill bit, I drilled a hole in the center of each piece of wood. I drilled a hole to a depth of a least 1 inch.
Next, I sanded and stained each of these wooden blocks.
I then cut the stems of the each coloured thistle to just over 1 inch in length.
Next, I placed one thistle into each wooden block.
Finally, I arranged the thistles into a rainbow sequence on my mantle piece. They really brighten up my living room and go with some of the other fabulous rainbow crafts and DIY's I have in my home (see them here).

It might be a little expensive for me to go to Scotland for thistle/thassels, but it's a beautiful project! I'll have to see what I can substitute.

you are most welcome! I have loved both thistles and Teasels for a long time - both are beautiful, but I believe the Teasels lend themselves more to the type of long term beauty you have so beautifully captured! When they bloom with the hundreds of tiny pink/lavender blossoms they do remind one of the Thistle.
