I used inexpensive paper plates between larger plates and coffee filters between smaller plates and dishes. Liquor stores will give you boxes; some have handy dividers for smaller odd items. Do not use newspapers! Print ink may transfer to white dishes or china.

For plates, I use packaging paper from moving companies. You can also use some of your dish towels too and handle two things at once!

Each time I have moved, I used washcloths, hand towels, and used bath towels (for large or unusual shaped pieces). Instead of packing just one thing, I am able to accomplish more.

I have never broken a dish yet just using newspaper and wrapping it like a package and stacking the dishes in a box. I have also used the washcloths, hand towels and bath towels to wrap them.

I would use a heavy cardboard box and wrap each dish with bubble wrap and bubble wrap between the dishes.

  • Home Depot sells a really good packing paper. It's heavy duty like what Pottery Barn wraps their dishes in.

This thread is 4 years old, but I wanted to jump in and offer some tips on packing plates for moving. One of the best ways to protect plates is by using dish packs or sturdy cardboard boxes specifically designed for dishware. Start by placing a layer of packing paper or bubble wrap at the bottom of the box. Then, individually wrap each plate with packing paper or bubble wrap, and stack them vertically in the box with some padding in between. Make sure to fill any empty spaces with packing material to prevent shifting during transit. They helped me move rapidly so I can recommend their services.
