Hi Deb, you can start by replacing boards that look really rotten or ruined, check the structure underneath when you remove old ruined boards. Replace with boards the same size as the old ones, you may have to sand the edges to make them match the existing boards and remove tripping hazards. (we did this on our old deck).
If you have plywood porch boards you can do the same, if the panels are rotten or damaged they will pull up easily, check the structure beneath and replace with wood the same thickness of plywood and again sand if needed at the joints as the new will sit higher than the old (this will reduce tripping hazards).
For the porch, pick a nice "porch paint" color and paint it. For a deck, pick a nice solid color stain and restain it.

What needs to be done?
Remove & replace it. You may have to cut it out in pieces. You’ll want to paint of stain all sides of the new boards.
You may find when you remove it that there is more broken or rotted wood underneath. As in the framing may be rotting.
If that’s the case, then that’s got to be repaired as well. I would buy a commercial mold killer, like ZEP and treat it for termites/bores.
Also find out why it’s breaking, as in water infiltration is a big problem. Or is it just really old?
