Some times shredded irish spring soap placed heavily between plants will deter some mammals. Hope this helps. Also, some one said to deter squirrels they put a flat lid on a fence for them and fed them seeds. Perhaps this would help for your squirrels to add in addition of trying to deter them from the garden. They like easy food, so perhaps giving them their daily portion of sunflower seeds or just even bird seed might help keep them out of the gardens.
