Can you give me ideas for building cheap and easy kitchen shelving?

We have a very tiny kitchen, so we really need to utilise every bit of it the best we can. We have a little niche in the kitchen that I would like to do more with. Our problem is money. What is the easiest and cheapest way to build shelves for this little area? The walls are kind of weird in that they are a bit soft. We think shelves will be fine, since they won't be so heavy individually. Another issue we're having with figuring this out, we have our recycling next to the cabinet there, and we really do not have any other places we could have that. The bags we use for the recycling barely fits in the space left, as it is now. The niche is approximately 60 centimetre (23.5 inches) wide, and 30 centimetre (12 inches) deep. It goes all the way to the ceiling, around 3 metres high. I'm up for any suggestions, not just for the shelves but also other small space recycling ideas.

there is a rail system at big box diy stores. 2 rails are installed on the wall, the shelf supports attach to the rails, and lumber is placed to fit on the shelf supports.

  • Hi, Meagan!

I can totally relate to the small space and no storage issue! I built open shelving for my kitchen using 2x10 lumber and spray painted metal brackets. Here is the post, if you’re interested: https://designsbystudioc.com/easy-build-open-chunky-shelving/ It was inexpensive and easy! I hope this helps!

For the recycling, get an attractive basket with a lid or two baskets . Then you can put them anywhere. We’ve had this one for years!🤔hmmmm, probably needs replacing.

I remodeled my clients 1910 kitchen that was about 5'x5' Some of things I did were to put a shelf right on the top of the stove lip to put oils and cooking condiments on. I used 2 bathroom wire racks on the wall next to the stove to store all the glass pot lids. I put a wall to wall shelf above the doorway for storage. I hung a grid on the opposite wall using 2 hooks to hang frying pans, utensils and pots (I made this grid from a Trane AirConditior that my client recycled) I hung it on 2 of those plant hanger hooks. I put sliding plastic bins in the bottom of the sink cabinet for cleaning supplies. I made a recycled 2 litre soda bottle plastic bag hanger for the cabinet door inside. On the other door, I put another of the wire racks to hang dish towels. I hung dry storage jars from underneath one cabinet for rice, flour etc.

All this stuff came from thrift stores. Pinterest was instrumental in me figuring out storage.

As to your shelving area, I would mount a 1x1x 3/4" lumber on each side of the alcove screwed into the sides of the alcove into the studs. then add your 12" shelf top and screw into each top side onto the support boards underneath. You can paint the support boards underneath the wall color to make them disappear.

I agree with putting a piece of lumber, which can be stained, on the wall attaching to studs, and then put brackets on this piece (spray for your desired color), and then buy plastic bins at Dollar Tree and cover with contact paper.
