How To Clean a Brass Tray

My Sister has been cleaning/purging her home lately and passing cast-offs down to me...yippee!

Although now to think of it...I'm starting to think I just may show up on one of those hoarders shows

In this last haul there was a HUGE unique brass tray ~

It had a lot of stains and discoloration. I hunted throughout the house for brass polish, none to be found, of course.

I remembered when I was little my Mom telling me to cover a patina'd penny I'd found in ketchup so I could see the date better. So with nothing to lose, I slathered ketchup all over the tray with my hand.

I let it sit for a while, probably about an hour or so.

I was surprised at how the ketchup not only removed the patina but the discolored spots also.

Unbelievably clean and shiny! And much healthier than using a chemical cleaner.

Cheaper too.

Along with the brass tray, she sent her 3 HUGE Orchid Cactus's.

I ended up placing the brass tray on my childhood dresser/desk then topped it with a scarf. If by chance the water overflows from the planter it will go onto the tray instead of my dresser/desk.

Difficult to get a good shot now that it reflects due to being "polished". You can see the some of the design in the tray you weren't able to before.

Still hard to believe good ol' ketchup got it this clean
