How can I make over kitchen cabinets?

When my house was built, they used white melamine cabinets. I've tried painting them, and even after sanding the paint has wore off around the handles. I'd really like to go with a wood look, as with kids and a messy husband, white just is not the color. Any suggestions?

Did you use oil based paint? Did you use a bonding primer? At this point you can look into getting new doors or resurfacing them, but for only a bit more you can get new cabinets. You can always try to remove the old paint and repaint in a color other than white. Problems around handles are always problematic. Some times changing handles to knobs or ones with back plates help.
