Hi Susan, if it's not hard wood, I would be tempted to paint it in a color you like. I would also either paint the inside a contrasting color or maybe line the back of it with wallpaper or fabric in a pretty pattern. You are getting some great answers. Keep in mind that you can also use film on the glass on the door...the kind that goes on with water and easily comes off with water. That way it would keep everything private.
I would clean the wood really good to get off dust and grime (maybe with a damp cloth drying behind with a dry one) and then use chalk paint in your color choice and a darker wax.
