    Hi Karen,

Here's a great article that lists the pros and cons of various types of flooring to use when you have dogs. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.

  • Fantastic site that Linda provided. At this very minute, there are 9 dogs, 6 cats, a canary and a dragon in my house . . . All rescues. I have hardwood floors and carpet. I also have some carpet runners on some of the hardwood for the older dogs for traction as hardwood can be slippery and they can get hurt and pull muscles. In some areas that the flooring still needs to be replaced, I am going to go with sheet vinyl - a dirty word to some, but what is available now is a far cry from what was available in the 50's and 60's. Easy to maintain and clean. Cool in summer and I can add washable area rugs in the cooler months. I am not concerned about degrading "housing value" as I live here and will do what is best for the pets and myself. Should I ever decide to sell, I can always upgrade flooring before it goes on the market. My girlfriend has hardwood and sheet vinyl and loves it and they have Rhodesian Ridgebacks and retired racing greyhound rescues. My other girlfriend did porcelain tile and sheet vinyl. She has the hugest Great Dane and their only issue is resealing the grout every year.

I know this is not for everyone but personally I found that commercial carpet tiles with rubber backer to honestly be the easiest. It's easy to clean and when they have an accident just take the filter out of the shop vac and vacuum it up.
