How can I spruce up the kitchen cabinets in a rental?

We are moving into a rental apartment with a very small kitchen. The previous tenant painted the cabinet doors a dark brown. The cabinet bases are the original, lighter stain. The doors look tacky and also make the room look smaller and darker. It’s stated in the lease that tenants can’t paint anything in the apartment without permission. Anyway, the property manager is not allowing me to paint the cabinets to improve their appearance 😢. Suggestions on how to make them look better without doing anything permanent? Thanks in advance!!

Renter's Cabinet Cover Up
You could put fabric in a solution of water and liquid laundry starch. Wring the fabric out but just enough so that the fabric is still wet. You can hang the fabric on almost any surface, including your cabinets. Put the fabric where you want to hang it and smooth it out to remove any air bubbles. The fabric will constrict as it dries. This works great for renters because you can still change your decor without making any holes. The starch will cause the fabric to cling and hang on its own. No nails or hooks are necessary. When it's time to take it off, just work a corner up and peel the entire fabric right off. This method works great on walls too.
