When I see them I knock them into a contaainer of soapy water.

Another method is a Japanese Beetle trap, the pheromone at the top of it draws them, the go into the bag never to come out until you dump it at the end of the season. One thing about using the traps is be sure to hang it as far away from your plants/trees as possible.

We've used traps similar to these: https://amzn.to/2SoPjYH

In conjunction with pheromone traps try planting 4 o'clocks around the borders of your yard and well away from your plants/tree. They are toxic to Japanese Beetles who seem to be attracted to them. Also try Garden Alive's grub traps in the spring or fall. These are an eco friendly way to get rid of the Japanese Beetle larva permanently.

I found the Bag a Bug traps to work really well this season. I had two half full. You need to empty them more than once a season. After a few weeks they smell so awful the will gag you. You CAN dump them and reuse the bag but you have to do so in a sealed bag as many will still be alive. Hose it out and rehang every couple of weeks. They do make replacement bags but why fill the dumps with plastic.

For the few I found on my Japanese willow, I just use a Gatorade bottle half filled with a little bit of dish detergent and water. Slide the bottle over them on a leaf scrape off with the cap if they don't fall in, cap, shake, dead. For the brave of heart, pick off with light gloves so you can grab them and pop in the bottle yourself.
