Use washing machine soap and deodorant
Beth....I would run a full cycle with laundry soap through and possibly add bleach.
They sell washing machine cleaner and you may have a cleaning cycle on your machine. The technician who delivered my last washer told me to run a cup of bleach instead of using the cleaner then run another cycle with nothing in the machine to remove the residue. I leave mine open between washes so it doesn't have the smell and I only have to clean it every 6 months or so as a preventive measure.
You could use vinegar instead of bleach but I would still run a rinse afterwards.
Kathy gave good advice. My washer has a cleaning cycle on it and when the light comes on, the manual says to run an empty normal load with a 2/3 cup of bleach in the bleach dispenser. While running the bleach load you will see a lot of soap suds spinning and slopping around. I think it says the cleaning cycle light will come on after about 60 loads. I think if you leave your door open between loads and run a cleaning/bleach load every 2 or 3 months you should be good.
