Whats the best way to distress a rocking chair?
I have a rocking chair that I believe is pretty old. I want to paint it and distress it to fit with a farmhouse or shabby chic theme. The seat. Has a cushion that I want to reupholster but I'm not sure how to do that either. I sure would love your help. I will send a picture tomorrow if it will help. Thank you so much, Teresa

Hi Teresa,
Here is a re-upholstered rocker that I did last year that turned out to be an antique. The woman I was doing it for did not pick fabric that is exactly farmhouse but keeping the wood natural sure gives it that aged feel as you can see in this post. I know you said you wanted to paint it but I just wanted to show you how beautiful the natural wood can be as well.

I have a link in that rocker post to my 'How to re-upholster' series posts that I did. Here is the 3 part post so you don't have to search for it:

This 3 part post will give you a lot of tips and tricks on re-upholstering depending on how many fabric parts you have. If it is only a seat then check out that "bench part 3 post" to learn how to do a rectangular or square seat.
If you have a curved seat, check out my post:

This post shows you how to re-upholster with upholstery fabric or thick heavy fabric around a curved seat. Good luck! upholstery is my favorite furniture transformations.
Thank you so much, let the adventure begin! I really appreciate your help.

Hello again, I'm sorry to pester you, but after reading your article on the rocking chair you did I'm wondering if I should paint my rocker after all. I'm going to try and upload a picture of it, and I would love your input when you get a free moment. It's no rush at all, I just keep going back and forth on this.

I think it would be really cute painted but it is totally up to you. Since it is already a dark color you could just sand to distress parts of it for that nice farmhouse look. Good luck.
