You can use the same method as cleaning your oven. There are some products made exclusively for grills. We use grill mats but before those, I would scrape once it was completely cooled.
If you are cleaning only the grill grates, then use a wire brush when you are done cooking, anything you put on there will come right off.
If you you wait until they are cool, them put them outside in a contractor's bag with 1 cup ammonia and close the bag securly. Let it set overnight, the next day open the bag and be sure you have plastic gloves on, rinse well and let dry. The fumes do the work and not the liquid ammonia.
Spray the grill with WD 40. Scrub away with aluminum foil (could use that foil you used cooking something on the grill with). Wash in Dawn dish soap afterward and rinse.
