Build a Chair With a Woven Seat

Building chairs is one of my favorite things to do. They are incredibly easy and can be finished in a variety of ways! This chair has a wood frame with round rungs, and a woven seat. The hardest part of this project is weaving the seat - it is very time consuming but well worth it!

The chair was constructed and thoroughly sanded before the seat was added. The entire chair was then stained in a rich, dark brown and sealed with polyurethane.

The instructions for the chair are in plan form, and are very easy to follow. The chair uses straight off-the-shelf lumber and dowel rods, and pocket hole screws.

The seat is woven using 1/4" flat reed in a 3 x 3 pattern. Each piece is stapled to itself on the underside using a household stapler.

In all honesty, it took a good eight hours to weave the seat. The reed had to be kept wet so that it is pliable, and it tightens up as it dries.

Visit the blog post for the entire material and supply list, as well as sources to purchase the materials. The post also includes a link to a tutorial on weaving the seat. This chair is definitely one of my favorites!
