This is how mine is made. My husband made the wood structure to support the fabric (there is velcro inside this at the edge of the wood. (This is securely fastened to studs in the ceiling) The curtain is very full and is pulled around the top of the bed each morning. At night, I flip it behind the bed. This is at least 25 years old and I wash it once a year.
You can use curtain rods mounted to the ceiling to make a faux canopy bed. You could also use plumbing items, pipes and brackets, to achieve a different look, again mounting everything on the ceiling to hang curtains from.
