It may work, but you need to consider the overall height of the counter, sink, range, etc. You may be better removing old counter and building up from the top of the cabinets. Your existing Formica top is probably 1.5" thick.
And determine if the current structure of your base cabinets is built strong enough to carry the extra weight. I went to an open house in my neighborhood yesterday. Some Harry Homeowners "tried" to do this over builder grade tile countertops. Wow, a Pinterest fail if I ever saw one. Obviously they do not have money to repair, and it is certainly hurting the sale price of the home. Local flippers are watching it carefully . . . So moral of the story is do your homework first and beef up your base cabinets before attempting.
