Is there any way to paint a plastic purse?

I have a purse I love but has seen better days. I’d love to paint it but I’m afraid the paint will peel from the handles. Has anyone had success with such a project? What kind of paint will stand up?

You could wrap the handles with a coordinating ribbon or fabric strips.
J, I had considered just covering the whole purse with fabric but I thought I'd try painting it first. The fabric will be plan B.
