Can you use wood mulch around tomato plants?

THE HEAT INDEX HAS BEEN SO HIGH I'M TRYING TO KEEP AS MUCH MOISTURE IN THE SOIL AS POSSIBLE?

  • As long as it is untreated cedar mulch, yes. Any chemical treatment, no.

    do not pile it up against the stems stalks only 2-3"s away clean chemical free wood mulch pine or cedar or pine needles or straw mulches will add organic compost to soil as it breaks down and hold in moisture. becareful not to water actual plants only ground so fungal issues do not start

    You could add some layers of newpaper under the mulch, or put black plastic under the mulch to retain more water, out here we use fir bark. You could also make a drip irrigation from some old 2 litre soda bottles or gallon milk jugs... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A31y7FvTs3I I use those metal stick in the ground garden hooks from the Dollar Tree to hang these up

    We have used grass clippings from the lawn for years, works.like a charm. Also prevent s weeds. (No lawn stuff on it).
