How often should I water trees?

Well Barbara it all depends on the type of trees you have, what type of soil they are in, what zone you are in, the microclimate of your property. What trees do you have? For instance, I am in zone 9 and my fig trees need every drop of water I can afford to give them. My humidity level today is running 11% - 13% which is very low. My figs are going from hard little knobs to dried up fruit in a matter of days. Also over 100° here. As is most of the nation during this heatwave spell, but for me, this is typical and we do not receive summer rainfall. Last time my area received any rain was in mid May. Let us know what zone you are in and what trees you have and hopefully we can narrow it down and offer reliable information.

where do you live? City? what kind of trees are they?

A deep root watering “spike” is essential. I would water 3/4 of the diameter of the tree’s crown.

If it’s record breaking heat and your tree is dropping leaves and limbs, water every day, early in the morning, slowly, 30 minutes each spike “punch”.

If the tree isn’t showing heat stress, then once a week.

Avoid watering an hour before or after sunset. Trees can get both bacterial & fungal infections that are expensive to cure.

The most basic answer is to water newly planted trees DEEPLY once or twice a week until established. After that (assuming you planted trees native to your area) they should mostly do fine with whatever rain comes. Water if you see the leaves drooping.
