Are they wood or metal? To shorten?

The trick is to keep the stool level. Are you shortening an existing stool?

If shortening an existing wooden stool, try using a laser level on the bottom of the legs to mark where to cut.

Metal legs are going to take a Sawz All with a metal blade or better yet a 4” angle grinder with a metal or diamond blade.

This is harder than it looks and will require a lot of filing the bottoms when done, unless you have new foot caps for them.

They will be sharp edges, so those new foot caps will be cut through sooner or later.

I've got a different perspective. I'm thinking cutting a circular seat to make a stool? A small Brad nail and a string will allow you to trace a perfect circle. Then 👤 a jigsaw to follow your path.
