My kitchen cabinets are really old. We have a small separation crack where my cabinets met in the corner and there is a gap. What can I do to fill in that gab without making a big ugly mess?

  • Hi, Tammy!

Depending on the size if the gap, it can most likely be filled with a bead of caulk. If the cabinets are painted, the caulk can be painted as well. If they are wood, a tan or brown caulk will have to be used. I hope this helps!

Add a piece of molding if it's too wide for caulking. You can stain or paint the molding to match.

Look in the tile section of your local big box hardware store and you should find colorful grout tone silicone tubes of caulking. This should allow you to pick a color that matches your counter, wall or existing backsplash. Using a caulking gun, carefully fill your crack with a bead of the silicone and wipe with a wet finger to smooth out. Use sparingly- you can always add more if needed.

Wood shrinks and expands parallel to the grain. That is why the old cabinets have a gap after many years. The caulk or wood trim suggestions are best ideas.
