Can you help me finish this room (pic attached)?
I am sorry about the picture; both for the mess and the darkness. But I hope you get what I mean when I am asking for help. What should i do with everything? I did the table...and the chairs are staying. I am talking about all of the cabinet things; the two on the left and right. The colours of the room did not turn out exactly how I had envisioned (outside reflections really changed it; but repainting is not an option) Right now the ones on the left are natural wood..and the left ones are a bleached wood look. My accent colour is 'RED'...and sticking with black, grey and white mostly. The ceiling is black; and the floor is a terrible terracotta looking ceramic tile; and the walls ended up being a 'darker grey' than I wanted because I have a pool outside and the backyard fence is blue grey. It changes every colour I put on the walls; makes them SO BLUE looking...and I wanted GREY: so I had to go darker than I wanted. (not happy but I am not changing it....if YOU KNEW what I went through..). I am not sure if you need more information that I have not shared or you can not see in this terrible picture..I am not technical. Please help me...I NEED to get this room finished! OK..enough rambling...haha..

Hi, Laura!
Do you want to paint the bookcases? I think if they are both painted white, it would help tie everything together and attract more light! The tile on the floor could also be stenciled in a black and white or grey and white pattern. I hope this helps!
Laura: what a conundrum you have! Let us help!
First of all, declutter --- get rid of stuff on table, the spindly plants and step stool, etc.
Donate the darker cabinet (and replace that wall hanging with a fresh picture/painting on the wall -- maybe on clearance at Marshalls or Home Goods -- for a totally new look!) "Edit" the knick-knacks in both cabinets... again... "stuff" makes rooms look smaller. (Just look at homes on HGTV, etc.. they are NOT filled with shelves of glass, knick-knacks, etc... and they look amazing.) Save ONLY what brings you pure JOY!
Also, a light-colored rug under the table would be a nice addition to the room!
Start a piggy bank for new paint. (Not on a shelf! LOL) Get a light neutral with no blue added to it! (The paint person can tell you the colors they are adding to the white base.)
Paint the cabinets white using RustOleum Enamel Paint since they will need to a durable finish.
Put down a throw rug to detract from the floor since it sounds like you hate it.
Chair cushions.
Add bright decor items but don't overload the room.
First of all what room is this? kitchen or dining room? If its not a kitchen, I would get rid of the odd cabinets on the wall I would also put some white curtains to go with the pickled wood base of the table.
Declutter.
I would add a larger light fixture over the table to add more light to the room.
Maybe add pictures with light frames and mats on the wall, but keep it to one large picture in such a small room.
If this is a dining room, add a large area rug in a light colors.
I would repaint that black ceiling, room is too dark and too small for a contracting color like black.
I agree with Sharon that the room needs more light. For maximum ambience, every room ideally should have three sources of light: general, task, and accent. The articles below explains these terms in more detail.
Switch out all lighting sources to LED- either integrated fixtures, or LED bulbs. You will find that LED light can greatly change the colors in paint and in other textures in the room.
Once you have the lighting tone established, then you can proceed with making other changes to the room decor.

Thank you for your reply. I did not put the light on for the picture. But I do want to change out the light fixture in this room. This one belongs over a pool table...haha. I do not have a 'style' that I navigate to...(country, traditional, modern..etc). I just do know..I do NOT like farmhouse. i pretty much think I have and like a combination of all others. So I will look into what you are suggesting.
You're welcome.
