Would it be possible to add some sort of doors to cover it, or even a tension rod and a curtain?

How about a curtain? You can user sheets with curtain clips.

  Yes, flat sheets. Or a shower curtain, (sheets are longer), a length of fabric from the fabric store, anything you like or coordinates with your decor. Even dropcloths from the hardware store. I like curtain clips as you can take down and change to launder on a moments notice and easy to put up.

Can you hang a pretty shower curtain over them?
Add a folding screen if you have room?

If you can't hide them, try making them pretty by either painting or covering with contact paper.

  Absolutely! You can also add vinyl decals. I've seen projects where polka dots, strips, even stenciling has been done. These might give you some ideas:
