You can use chalk paint on an old metal trunk. You could distress it if you like that look or just make it a solid color. You can finish with a clear sealer or use chalk paint wax.

Priming and painting would probably help the finish. You could also add some casters or wheels on the bottom and use it as a coffee table. Sounds like a fun project!
Spray or paint three or four of your favorite colour leave to dry between coats . Sand them back gently to reveal all the different levels of colour and the matt varnish then put some castors on.
