Pour white vinegar into the soap dispenser and run an empty load. It should clean out most of the dirty mess.

After making sure the dishwasher is free of any food particles, place a cup of white cleaning vinegar in an open dishwasher safe container on the upper rack and run a short hot cycle. The sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the unit and run another short hot cycle. This will clean, sanitize, and make it sparkle.

Prior to adding detergent, put one (1) drop of blue Dawn in the dispenser. You will be amazed at how much better your dishes will look, especially glasses and plastic.

Bobbie, first be sure there is no food in the food trap. Then we found the easiest way to clean ours was to run a citrus dry drink, Tang, cleaned it best. We emptied the whole jar in the dishwasher and ran it full cycle. NOW they have LemiShine and other citrus cleaners that remove all the junk and minerals from a dishwasher. We ran the dishwasher empty and followed the directions to clean it, now we add a little to each load to keep it clean. LemiShine is an Equate (walmart) brand, but there are other brands as well. You can find it where dish washing detergents are found in Walmart, or other non store brands too.

This citrus recommendation was only for cleaning the appliance, not china dishes, but thank you for that helpful hint.

A repairman told me to put a cup of bleach in the top rack and run a cycle empty. It works, though I kind of am a little leery of bleach. I have used white vinegar with a lot of success. You don't even have to run it empty. If you have glassware or dishes that are getting cloudy put them in the dishwasher with the vinegar. They'll come out sparkling.
